Manta Stingray (ei)

[ . BACK to Worldkigo . TOP . ]
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Manta ray (ei)

***** Location: Japan, Philippines
***** Season: All Summer
***** Category: Animal

*****************************
Explanation

akaei, aka ei 赤鱏 (あかえい) red stingray
ei 鱏(えい) / 鱝(えい)
Dasyatis akajei

They live in the warmer seas of Southern Japan.
Their meat is quite a regional delicacy, even in the regions of Akita and Yamagata, even up to Hokkaido.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

The manta ray (Manta birostris)
is the largest species of the rays. The largest known specimen was more than 7.6 metres (25 ft) across, with a weight of about 2,300 kilograms (5,100 lb). It ranges throughout tropical waters of the world, typically around coral reefs. They have the largest brain-to-body ratio of the sharks, rays and skates (Elasmobranchii).
Mantas have a variety of common names, including Atlantic manta, Pacific manta, devilfish, and just manta. At one time it was thought that there were many species of manta.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

The stingrays are a family—Dasyatidae—of rays,
cartilaginous fishes related to sharks. They are common in coastal tropical and subtropical marine waters throughout the world, but the family also includes species found in warmer temperate oceans such as Dasyatis thetidis, and species entirely restricted to fresh water such as D. laosensis and Himantura chaophraya. With the exception of Pteroplatytrygon violacea, all dasyatids are demersal.

They are named after the barbed stinger (actually a modified dermal denticle) on their tail, which is used exclusively in self-defense. The stinger may reach a length of approximately 35 cm, and its underside has two grooves with venom glands. The stinger is covered with a thin layer of skin, the integumentary sheath, in which the venom is concentrated. Some species have several stingers, and a few, notably Urogymnus asperrimus, lack a sting entirely.

The skin of the ray (EI in Japanese) is used as an under layer for the cord or leather wrap (known as ito in Japanese) on Japanese swords due to its hard, rough, texture that keeps the braided wrap from sliding on the handle during use. They are also used to make exotic shoes, boots, belts, wallets, jackets, and even cellphone cases.

Maggots are used for fishing bait and human therapy.

In North America, maggots have been used for years mainly as ice fishing bait; recently, however, anglers have started using them year round.

Certain live maggots have been employed since antiquity as an economical, safe and effective type of wound debridement.

Screw worms, but they aren't really worms at all -
they're maggots.
Screw worms are the larvae of a kind of fly that lays eggs in the open wounds of cattle. When they hatch, the maggots feed on the animal's tissue, using sharp mandibles to tear at the flesh. Screw worms can kill cattle in 10 days if left untreated.
