In Japan, we usually translate it as Shoonin (shonin)上人、superior human being.

The Feast of the Virgin, August 15

The dawn sunlight
bursts through massed forbidding clouds ..
Feast of the Virgin.

Hugh Bygott

And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars:
And she being with child cried, travailling in birth, and pained to be delivered.

Revelation 12: 1,2

The sun seemed excessively bright this morning, the feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The unseasonal turbulance of this late summer contrasted with the brilliance of the sun. It was as if a massed leaden sky devoid of the colours of dawn had been pierced by intense light.
Having spent a life in Physics I contrasted the nuclear reactions in the Sun throwing out immense energy and the gravitational forces in the Sun restraining it.

In the end, gravity must triumph,
the Sun must die as a star being subject to the laws of the Universe.
Coming to be and passing away continues remorselessly.

We too are subject to decay. Those who believe in the Resurrection look forward to the end of the time-bound universe when they too can share in the life of perfection. We expect our own death and revere the relics of the saints. From the earliest Christian tradition there were no relics of Mary.

In the Western Christian tradition she was assumed into heaven after her death. In the Eastern Christian tradition her grave was empty. In both traditions, she alone has mortal transfiguration; she has reached the eternal perfection we who believe in the resurrection of the body hope is our own finality.

No human being in history has so fired the artistic imagination as Mary; no human being in history is seen so clearly as the mediator and intercessor in relating to the power of God.

As a Philosopher I am drawn always to the mystery of the Trinity and the idea of Redemption. Mary cannot be separated from this Redemption.
It is not surprising then that many who believe in the creative power of a loving God are so drawn to Mary. There is nothing that we can ever do in our dedication and devotion to Mary that remotely approaches God who has placed her so highly.

Lets us rejoice today, the Feast of her Assumption.
