Some useful information

Every day of the week is associated traditionally with a different neighbood, because every the local market day is in a different place. For example Pazar (Sunday) has market day on Sunday and Carsamba (Wednesday) has market day on Wednesday. I only know of two such place names, but traditionally everyone knew from the day of the week which neighborhood you would go to to shop.

Carsamba is a particularly centrally placed market and also known for its conservatism and traditionalism. It is associated with the tomb and mosque of Fatih Sultan Mehmet II, the conquerer of Byzantium.

There are so many special days for special saints, and traditionally, a hundred years ago, all writers could mention a flower or something and everyone would then have recognized which days and places and Sufi orders and such they were talking about.

Hayacinths (sunbul) are associated with SAINT ''Hyacinth'', or Sunbul Efendi, and during the Holy Month of Fasting Stambouli (Istanbul) people visit Sunbul Efendi's tomb. The First day of Ramazan, the month of Fasting, one visits Ramazan efendi's tomb. The month of Ramazan is strongly associated with the shadow plays with shadow puppets called Karagóz (Dark EYE) a kind of Turkish punch and judy.

The day before the Feast of Haj (Kurban Bayram, éid ul adha), one visits Nurretin efendi in Karagumruk. His flower is the jonquil. Before getting married or before having circumcision, one visits Eyyub Efendi in Eyyub. (He was a close friend of the Prophet Mohammed's).

Berat Kandil (Leylatul Berat, Laylatul Barat)
is the 14th/15th of the month of Shaban, night of the full moon before the beginning of Ramazan. The Muslim calendar is lunar. Berat Kandil is dedicated to forgiveness. It is a time to examine one's conscience and to redirect one's attention to renewing dedication to living. "kandil" means 'candle' in Turkish and there are certain nights where the lights are kept on all night in places of worship so people can pray and visit holy places. Leylatul Berat in Arabic. "Berat Eve."
