HANA is the ultimate symbol for the elegance, splendour and fleetingness of things. It can not simple be exchanged for SAKURA in many cases.

For example, hanagokoro, the flower heart, refers to a lady, but you can not say "sakuragokoro" in that case.

"Hana no inochi", the life of flowers, is a general statement, but "sakura no inochi" is not used here.

hanami 花見 the cherry blossom viewing party
In old times, farmers went out to see the wild cherry trees in the local forest to get a hint at when to start preparing the fields for the rice and how the harvest would be this year. After hanami it was time to tend to the wet rice fields. In many parts of my area, this is still done. In our neighbourhood, where the Daigo Cherry Tree flowers, after the hanami at his feet the farmers look to the forest at a special wild cherry tree to see if its time for the fields.

Since rice farming was essential for surviving in the olden days, HANAMI was the most important festival leading to a good harvest, thus it is not forgotten even today.

The SA from SAKURA is a word leading to the 5. month of the old calender (satsuki) and KURA/GURA comes from KAGURA, the famous dances in Shinto Shrines.
SAKURA is therefore the meaning of a holy dance in May to evoke a good harvest. Now the calender has changed, but the charm of Sakura and flower viewing has stayed with us.

Japanese name for depicting this group: SAKURA
Habitat: mountain area
Height: 3-20m Blooming season: March-May

Prunus yamasakura: Japanese name is YAMAZAKURA (mountain cherries); most popular species in Japan. Often seen in mountainous areas. Red leaves sprout at the same time as pinkish white flowers. Leaves become red again in autumn.
Prunus pendula: Japanese name is EDOHIGAN; leaves sprout after its pinkish white flower blooms. It blooms earlier than other species.
Prunus lannesiana: Japanese name is OOSHIMAZAKURA; green leaves sprout at the same time with white flowers. Its leaves are utilized as Japanese sweets.
Prunus sargentii: Japanese name is OYAMAZAKURA; red leaves sprout at the same time as pink flowers.
Prunus incisa: Japanese name is MAMEZAKURA. Small tree, the height is 3-8m. Leaves and flowers are small too.
Prunus campanulata: Japanese name is HIGANZAKURA; pendulous red flowers bloom in January-March. This is a Chinese cultivar.

Popular cultivars are:
SOMEIYOSHINO: cultivar bred by Prunus pendula x Prunus lannesiana. This is a most popular cultivar, planted in parks and house gardens all over Japan.

SHIDAREZAKURA: cultivar of Prunus pendula; its branches hang down and show flowers like a cascade.

A famous medieval age monk called SAIGYO wrote the following poem about cherry blossom:
"Could I die under a cherry blossom tree in full bloom
on a full-moon night of spring?"

This poem is popular in Japan because we can feel like the monk when we stand under cherry blossom trees in spring. It is a heavenly experience, as if we are taking a shower of pink flowers.

SAKURA (cherry blossom) is the national flower of Japan, although the floral symbol of the Japanese royal family is KIKU (chrysanthemum).
HANA means flower in Japanese, but we sometimes use HANA for depicting SAKURA, especially in thetraditional literature world.
The Japanese enjoy parties (drinking, eating, and singing a song) under cherry blossom trees in spring and this is called HANAMI (cherry blossom viewing).

SAKURA is a useful tree. We make crafts from SAKURA wood, the leaves are
used for wrapping foods or sweets, and the flowers are used for making fragrant tea called "SAKURA YU".

In the UK we refer to 'blossoms' as the stuff all over the trees in spring, for example cherry blossom, apple blossom, hawthorn blossom, peach blossom. The only time the plural noun would be used is when referring to the collective of these different 'blossoms'.

i grew up in washington, dc. the tidal basin, near the jefferson memorial (the potomac river experiences tides as far north as dc) is surrounded by cherry trees, a gift of the japanese people.

my dad, an early rising recreational fisherman and professional photographer, would wait til the peak of the cherry blossom bloom, then rise early to fresh squeeze orange juice into a thermos. then he would bundle the five of us children, still in pajamas and our blankets, into the car and
drive us down to watch the sun rise thru the backlit cherry blossoms. of course, we would sip his fresh squeezed orange juice during this awesome experience.

this haiku, written 50 years later, during a trip to dc during cherry blossom season, was in the Basho festival anthology this year:

As we walked in Paris on Good Friday, we noticed the usual morning-time flood approaching in the gutter alongside the kerb, carrying with it whatever debris the road sweepers had swept up. Only this time, the water carried a flood of pink froth -- we stopped in amazement -- cherry petals far from the trees -- and the flood of water so pretty that morning...

Jean Cholley explains that this is a scene in the poultry market in the Muromachi district of Edo (today's Tokyo). The birds' eyes were sewn shut to keep them immobile while being fattened in their cages; En village de miséreux: Choix de poèmes de Kobayashi Issa (Paris: Gallimard, 1996) 237. Issa's heart goes out to the birds not only because they are not long for this world. They cannot see, and never again will see, the cherry blossoms.

This hokku is from the second month (March) of 1818, when Issa was back in his home town or traveling near it. It's a single statement leading up to the cherry tree, and the passive voice puts a lot of emphasis on the tree trunk being rubbed by a large horse. Issa is empathizing with the tree here and imagining how it must feel -- a sense of wonder that isn't hyperbole, since in Japanese Buddhism grasses and trees were believed to be capable of achieving enlightenment (soumoku-joubutsu 草木成仏).

The above is a standard vanilla translation based on the assumption that Issa regarded the rubbing to be instrumental and done in one direction only, from the horse to the tree. However, that way of reading the hokku probably underestimates Issa's multivalent way of viewing the universe. It also overlooks an interesting ambiguity here: shiri, meaning 'rump' when referring to the horse (translation 1), can refer to the tree as well: shiri means not only 'hips, rump' but also 'back or bottom end or part,' and ki-jiri means the lower trunk of a tree. In translation 2 the cherry tree's lower trunk (shiri) is simultaneously being rubbed by the horse's rump (shiri) and rubbing the rump -- or, from the horse's point of view, causing its rump to be rubbed.
Because of the passive voice in the verb, both the tree and the horse are actively passive and passively active. The main focus seems to be on the uncanny mutual passive-active rubbed-rubbing relationship that is briefly shared by two different beings. I wonder if Issa didn't deliberately try to obscure the subject/object relationships here and intend the hokku to be read both ways, back and forth open-endedly like a moebius strip running between two different forms of consciousness. Probably translation 2 should be the first translation.

It's not clear whether any cherry blossoms are falling because of the rubbing. The tree is probably beginning to bloom at this time, but if petals were falling, it would probably be mentioned, since that's a very important image. In any case, Issa may take this kind of tactile blossom viewing/rubbing to be just as meaningful as human blossom-viewing, if not more meaningful in its own intimate way.

We have a wild cherry tree native to the region. Its blooms are beautiful white spikes like candles, but the fruit is exceptionally tart.
Nonetheless, it was used as a food by Native Americans and European colonists. Not any more, though.

In World War II, "kamikaze" soldiers on fighter planes made suicidal attacks against the Allies. One of those planes was named "Ouka", which means cherry blossoms.

Sakura is the name of a traditional Japanese folk song depicting spring, the season of sakura. Contrary to popular belief, the song did not originate from ancient times (as in, not from the Heian period or prior). It was first composed during the Edo period for children learning to play the koto.

Originally, the lyrics "Blooming cherry blossoms" were attached to the melody. The song has been popular since the Meiji period, and the lyrics in their present form were attached then. It is often sung in international settings as a song representative of Japan. Throughout the ages there have been many rearrangements of the song, but Michio Miyagi's rendition is often regarded to be the best of them all.

This hokku was written in the 2nd lunar month (March) of 1810, when Issa was in the area east of Edo Bay now known as Chiba Prefecture. It is cherry blossom season, but Issa finds the beauty of the blossoms becomes a hindrance that prevents him from concentrating on the spiritual aspects of Amida Buddha's Pure Land at the westernmost edge of the universe. The first line is stressed and is written in katakana script ( ナンノソノ ), which is similar to putting something into italics or bold letters in English. It sticks out like a piece of strongly felt dialog -- with himself, with the cherry blossoms, with the reader. He seems to be saying something like, Give me a break, will you, cherry blossoms? Even if the cherry blossoms have appeared in this world from the Pure Land, they are still a distraction to Issa, since he feels they are keeping him from more important meditations on the Pure Land itself amid his daily life, and he will not mourn the scattering of their petals.

This hokku is from the second month (March) of 1810, when Issa was traveling around in the area east of the city of Edo. It is the season to view cherry blossoms, but Issa is saddened by the way so many people are not satisfied with being near and viewing the blossoming cherries but feel they must own part of their favorite tree. In Issa's time it was common for partiers under the cherry blossoms, often drunk, to break off blossoming twigs or even small limbs of cherry trees and take them home with them, and some cherry trees became so depleted Issa wonders elsewhere how they even survive. In this hokku Issa calls human mistreatment of cherry trees a sin or transgression (tsumi), by which he seems to be referring to the Buddhist prohibitions against killing living beings and against causing living beings to suffer. These were evil deeds (zai-aku) according to Buddhism, while in ordinary Japanese "sin" more generally referred to doing something cruel, heartless, or inhuman.

The hokku does not seem to suggest that the trees themselves are responsible for or welcome the selfish and cruel acts that humans commit against them. The blossoms deeply move and attract humans with their beauty, but it is humans whose greed, desire, and delusions mislead them into thinking they have the right to treat the trees as mere decorative objects that can be privately owned, and this greedy attachment to the blossoms leads people to commit violent acts against both the blossoms and themselves. In fact, the first line of the hokku clearly says that the cherries do nothing but "simply" or "only" blossom and do not deserve to be dismembered.

The hokku following this one in Issa's diary sheds further light on human violence against cherry trees:

This hokku is from the ninth month (October) of 1822, but it has the word "spring" above it in Issa's diary. It seems to be a hokku presenting an almost ecstatic vision on a very large scale. There were two main routes linking Edo and Kyoto, one following the Pacific coast and one going through the mountains of central Honshu, but I take Issa to be referring to the Tokaido road going along the Pacific coast, since the road through the mountains branched off here and there, while the second line of the hokku says a single road road extends all the way to Kyoto. The weather near the Pacific was also warmer, so there would be cherries in bloom all the way from Edo, where the shogun lived, to Kyoto, the ancient imperial capital. The Tokaido road was 492 km (306 miles) long, and the journey from Edo to Kyoto usually took about two weeks, though travelers had a variety of inns and restaurants to choose from along the way. One thing almost every traveler wore was a wide hat woven from rush, straw, bamboo, or other materials. Some were conical in shape, others flat or rounded, but Issa says that at this time of year they all equally turn into hats for cherry blossom viewing.

The long journey was arduous for most travelers, but the hokku seems to be suggesting that at this time of year people forget their difficulties and participate in a great collective blossom-viewing walk that goes on and on dreamlike for two weeks. The physical hats look the same as they were before their wearers began the trip, but the feelings of the wearers are no longer the same. One indication of the transformation seems to be the double meaning of "on one road," hinted at by Issa's use of the emphatic particle zo together with it: here "on one road" can mean not only 1) traveling on one physical road but also 2) with all your heart, intently, as if possessed by the blossoms.

Sometime during the 1790s Issa wrote a somewhat similar hokku:

the season, too, perfect --
blossom-viewing hats
in all fifty-three towns

koro mo yoshi gojuusan-tsugi hanami-gasa

This is a farewell hokku to a fellow haikai poet who is leaving for Kyoto. The first line suggests that the man setting out is as outstanding as the season, and the hokku as a whole seems to be a prayer that his traveler's hat turn into into a blossom-viewing hat each day as he passes through all fifty-three main inn towns on the Tokaido route to Kyoto along with many other blossom-loving travelers.

This hokku is from lunar 3/17 (April 12) in 1808, when Issa was living in Edo. The cherry blossoms are at their peak, and day by day more and more trees are scattering so many blossoms that the slightest breeze causes a small snowstorm of petals. People and animals are also going crazy watching the short, intensely attractive lives and equally beautiful aerial deaths of countless blossoms, but the implied subject of the verb 'live, pass time' in Issa's third line seems to be the blossoms themselves, which are even more excessive than the creatures watching them. The petals seem to completely obscure the border between this world and the other world, between consciousness and unconsciousness.

In the hokku following this one in Issa's diary even a bird used as a decoy by hunters, a bird whose sight has cruelly been taken away, can nevertheless feel the falling petals:

a bird, eyes sewn shut
cries out

hana saku ya me o nuwaretaru tori no naku

Some humans are seem awed by the raw primal (almost erotic?) power of the many fluttering petals, as in this hokku four verses later:

amid falling blossoms

Other possibilities for the polysemous third line of the translation would be "completely zoned out," "beyond all reason," or "with reckless abandon."

This hokku is from lunar 3/15 (April 18) in 1810, when Issa was in Edo and when the cherry blossoms were at their height and beginning to fall. On this day he went to a temple in Asakusa to see a special showing of a statue of Amida Buddha borrowed from Zenkoji Temple, located near his hometown.

The hokku develops a traditional waka image of a temple evening bell booming out while cherry blossoms begin to fall as day ends, an image in which the cherry blossoms enact the bell's message that all things are impermanent and constantly changing. Issa adds to this the image of the now restless petals expressing their uneasiness about the fact that they will soon fall and scatter, or perhaps they are already beginning to fall. The agitated movement of the blossoms could be from a slight breeze springing up at sunset or from the fluttering of those blossoms which are already falling.

Issa also notices the excitement and uneasiness of a school of sweetfish that are swimming and leaping upstream to breed at this time of year, and he feels that they, too, respond to the temple bell. The fish are said to have a sweet taste and were therefore a target of river fishermen, and most varieties lived only for a single year or season, causing sweetfish to be nicknamed "one-year fish." In this hokku and in the other hokku Issa wrote on this day, he obviously thinks he can discern the unease and restlessness of the sweetfish, who somehow know that they must complete a long, dangerous journey to their spawning grounds up a river filled with small dams and waterfalls, fishing weirs, and traps and that even if they finish the journey, they probably won't live to see their offspring. By adding sweetfish to the cherry blossoms Issa expands the image concretely to include all living things, and his sympathy for the blossoms and fish is not for them only but also palpably for himself and other humans.

Some western readers may find this hokku to be full of allegory, personification, or anthropomorphism, but I would call Issa's world view as expressed in this hokku a good example of the shamanism and animism that permeated traditional Japanese popular religion (including Buddhism) or, more widely, traditional Japanese culture as a whole. This doesn't mean that everyone living in Japan before around 1900 was an animist, but it does mean that when we read a hokku like this one there is a good chance that the writer actually believes cherry blossoms and fish have forms of consciousness and sentience that partially overlap with those of humans and that allow various types of communication to occur between different orders of living beings.

皇円 Saint Koen (1074 - 1169), the mentor of 法然 Saint Honen, meditated here waiting for 弥勒 Miroku Bosatsu to come back the earth, trying to become a serpent that would never die. When he was about to die, he jumped into the pond and became a serpent.
