Dear Gabi san,
I can't imagine why someone wouldn't appreciate knowing more about haiku's Japanese origins, but some people might interpret than information as a set of rules holding them to task. Now I'm discovering that many of the so-called haiku rules are really Western notions re-imported from Japan, or misinterpretations of the original Japanese form.
I think that's where your work becomes important, as a Westerner living in Japan, able to interpret from both sides of the culture/language. Your efforts are greatly
appreciated by most haijin I correspond with.
Over the last year, I've read voraciously about haiku, its traditions, its transformation (some might say transmogrification) in recent times and by Western culture, and the many "ku wars" that rage, senselessly I think. What I care about is to understand the traditions in an historical context, become adept at the original form.

Gabi san.
You have let us know that rain-praying is common custom through all kind of human being.
So if we would make poem like haiku or paint picture of the old custom, all people could understand the image directly.

I fully agree with Gabi that this puts a finger on the greater value of the Worldkigo database.
We may sometimes overlook the more spiritual dimension of our collection (not only the prayers as such, but the spritual commonality which this compiling task is bringing out in us).

INDIA SAIJIKI
Quite a volume of work has been done rel to season-words applicable to India.
I never realised that so much and much more is there in this segment of poetry: I am yet to come out of the amazement: it makes me feel so humble.
This morning I watched an interview with a Bharatha Naatyam (Indian classical dance) artist who studied under an eminent guru for over 25 years: incredible to realise how much is there.
Really, all this makes me open my mouth in great awe and respect

this cyber space of yours is a revelation

I want to tell you something strange.
I used to like nature and feel relaxed in nature.
Recently, I began to recognize Nature.
Yesterday, I found out that the pinky plant which is crawling from the fence of the neighbours to my house is: the morning glory!
I recognized it from the many photoes I saw on the net!
I noticed a willow tree, too.
I used to see plants, birds, flowers... whithout knowing anything about them.
Isn't this wonderful. I began to listen to nature and commune with it.
I walked in the neighbourhood and saw a small tree steming out of a rock. I stood to watch it.

Much useful and needed information.

Dear Gabi san,
Your WKD white night discussion is very thorough, and I found some good links there. Your blog continues to be a valuable source for my neo-haijin education.
Thank you!

That's a phrase for "I admire you" for your initiative, creativity, patience, persistence, research capability, and help to all humanity.
That is not common to millions of people.
And I suppose you do this only by yourself.
Thank you.

..................................
It's always surprising to me how, in classic Japanese haiku, what seem like simple descriptions often turn out to have greater depth of meaning. It's hard to think of ways of doing the same thing in contemporary Englsih-language haiku writing.
Nowadays, either 'prettiness', or a sense of irony is all, at least
in America! We seem to have cut our cultural heritage out of our
haiku pratice; aspects of our cultural heritage being Greek/ Roman/ Norse myth, Christian imagery and connotations, Celtic
imagery and connotations, and even history!
Where are the haiku about Revolutionary and Civil War battlesites, or the monuments such as the Lincoln Memorial and others in Washington D.C., the Statue of Liberty in New York City, Mt. Rushmore?
I've tried for some time to write a haiku about cherry trees that
would allude to the legend of the young George Washington trying out
a new axe by chopping down a cherry tree, and then, when asked by his father if he had done it, saying,
"Father, I cannot tell a lie. I chopped it down."
A legend meant to show Washington's rectitude even
at a young age.

hello kigo, great collection of information
dribble castles

Appalachian sand
I propose "dribble castles" as a summer kigo. They are sand castles by dribbling a mixture of sand and seawater in clumps and piles to make the spires of a castle. See me for sources of pictures and further explanations as I have colleted this phrase from another source and is not mine orginally.
Thanks, anonymous san.
Please contact me directly about this !

Thanks, Gabi.
I pop into your world data base all the time for info, but sometimes the Japanese kigo simply don't fit my reality.
But you provide a great service to the haiku world and I'm sure lots of us take advantage of your research.
Thank you so much for that.

Someone has hijacked my gmail adress and is sending VIAGRA and other SPAM with it.
This is not from myself and I hope to fix this problem somehow.
I am sorry for any inconvenience this is costing you.

Dear Dr. Gabi,spam... oh yes. As I hate the publicity for 'stand up stuff'. Specially in groups and internet communities like these here. Some 'humans' have not the slightest respect for other things except for their own money !
